Most Common Faucet Problems

Leaking Faucets

A dripping faucet can be caused by a variety of different issues. The most common cause is a worn-out washer. The washer is located on the bottom of the faucet’s cartridge. Over time, the washer can become stiff, torn, dislodged, or worn out. This can cause the faucet to leak or drip. In some cases, the problem can be fixed by replacing the washer. If the faucet is still leaking after the washer has been replaced, the problem may be with the valve seat. This is the part of the faucet that connects the spout to the base. The valve seat can corrode over time, causing the faucet to leak. In some cases, the valve seat can be cleaned or sanded down to remove the corrosion. In other cases, the valve seat may need to be replaced.

Low Water Pressure

If your faucet is not producing enough water, the problem may be with the aerator. The aerator is a small device that is attached to the end of the faucet. It is designed to mix air with the water to create a steady stream of water. Over time, the aerator can become clogged with mineral deposits. This can reduce the water pressure. The aerator can be cleaned by soaking it in vinegar or a descaling solution. In some cases, the aerator may need to be replaced.

Squeaky Faucets

If your faucet is making a squeaking or screeching noise when you turn it on or off, the problem may be with the washer. The washer can become loose or worn out over time, causing it to vibrate against the other parts of the faucet. This can create a squeaking or screeching noise. The washer can be tightened or replaced to fix the problem.

Sticky Faucets

If your faucet is hard to turn on or off, the problem may be with the valve stem. The valve stem is the part of the faucet that connects the handle to the cartridge. Over time, the valve stem can become worn out or corroded, causing it to stick. The valve stem can be lubricated with a silicone-based grease to make it easier to turn.

How to Fix a Leaky Faucet

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to fix a leaky faucet:

  1. Turn off the water supply to the faucet.
  2. Remove the faucet handle. This can usually be done by unscrewing the handle from the top of the faucet. In some cases, the handle may be held in place by a small set screw. If this is the case, you will need to remove the set screw before you can remove the handle.
  3. Remove the cartridge. The cartridge is the part of the faucet that controls the flow of water. It is located underneath the handle. In some cases, the cartridge may be held in place by a small retaining nut. If this is the case, you will need to remove the retaining nut before you can remove the cartridge.
  4. Inspect the cartridge for signs of wear and tear. If the cartridge is worn out or damaged, it will need to be replaced. If the cartridge is in good condition, you may be able to fix the problem by replacing the washer.
  5. Replace the washer. The washer is located on the bottom of the cartridge. To remove the washer, you will need to unscrew the screw that is holding it in place. Once the screw has been removed, you can pull the washer off of the cartridge. Replace the old washer with a new one that is the same size and shape as the old one. Screw the new washer onto the cartridge.
  6. Reassemble the faucet. Reinstall the cartridge and handle. Turn the water supply back on and test the faucet to make sure it is no longer leaking.
